Understanding Foot and Ankle Deformities
Foot and ankle deformities can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to injury, disease, or wear and tear over time.
Common deformities include:
- Flatfoot (Pes Planus): A condition where the arch of the foot collapses, leading to pain and difficulty walking.
- Clubfoot (Talipes Equinovarus): A congenital deformity where the foot is twisted out of shape or position.
- Bunions (Hallux Valgus): A bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe.
- Hammertoes: A deformity causing the toes to bend or curl downward instead of pointing forward.
- Charcot Foot: A condition often associated with diabetes, leading to weakening of the bones in the foot.
Symptoms of Foot and Ankle Deformities
The symptoms of foot and ankle deformities can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition but often include:
- Pain and Discomfort: Especially during walking or standing.
- Swelling and Redness: Around the affected area.
- Difficulty Wearing Shoes: Due to the abnormal shape of the foot.
- Limited Mobility: Reduced range of motion in the foot or ankle.

When to Seek Medical Attention
It's important to seek medical care if you or your child experience persistent pain, difficulty walking, or noticeable deformities in the foot or ankle. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent further complications and improve outcomes.
